If you’ve recently started researching care options for yourself or a loved one, you’ve probably noticed that the senior living industry has a language all its own. Terms like “CCRC”, “sub-acute rehab,” and “continuum of care” can make a straightforward search feel overwhelming. You shouldn’t need a medical degree to understand your options.

Village Point Rehabilitation & Healthcare put together this easy-to-follow guide to the most common senior living terms. Whether you’re just beginning your research or narrowing down your choices, this glossary will help you ask the right questions and make confident decisions.

What Is Independent Living?

Independent living communities are designed for active, self-sufficient older adults who want a maintenance-free lifestyle with the bonus of a built-in community. Think private apartments or cottages, restaurant-style dining, social events, fitness programs, and the freedom to come and go as you please.

Independent living is a great fit if you or your loved one is healthy and active but craving more connection, convenience, or peace of mind. It does not include hands-on personal care or medical services, but for many seniors, that’s ideal.

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living bridges the gap between independent living and skilled nursing care. It’s a residential setting with trained staff available around the clock to assist with daily activities, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and medication management. Residents still enjoy private or semi-private living spaces and a full calendar of activities.

According to McKnight’s Senior Living, 1 in 5 older adults would pick assisted living if they couldn’t live alone. It’s often the right step when living alone at home has become unsafe or isolating, but more supportive care isn’t needed yet. The goal is to provide just the right amount of support while preserving independence and dignity.

What Is Memory Care?

Memory care is a specialized type of senior living designed specifically for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or other forms of cognitive decline. Memory care communities provide secure, structured environments with staff trained to support residents with patience, compassion, and expertise.

Daily routines, sensory activities, and familiar surroundings are carefully designed to reduce anxiety and promote a sense of calm and belonging. At Village Point Rehabilitation & Healthcare, our memory care program is built around person-centered principles, meaning care is tailored to each resident’s individual history, preferences, and needs.

Memory care is worth considering when a loved one’s safety, personal hygiene, or ability to manage daily tasks has been noticeably affected by cognitive changes.

What Is Respite Care?

Respite care provides short-term, temporary stays in a professional care community, giving family caregivers a much-needed break while ensuring their loved one is safe, comfortable, and well cared for. Respite stays can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks.

Respite care is also a smart way to experience a senior living community before committing to a permanent move. Many families find that a respite stay helps ease the transition and gives everyone peace of mind.

Senior Living Short-Term Stays: More Options Than You Might Think</H2>

Not all senior living stays are permanent. Senior living short-term stays include respite care, post-hospital rehabilitation, and recovery stays. These options are ideal for seniors who need temporary support after a surgery, illness, or injury—or for families who want to “try before they commit” to a long-term move.

At Village Point Rehabilitation & Healthcare, our short-term rehabilitation program is designed to help patients recover quickly and safely, with the goal of returning home as strong and independent as possible. Our therapy team works seven days a week to keep recovery on track.

Skilled Nursing: When Medical Support Is the Priority

A skilled nursing facility (SNF) provides 24-hour care from licensed nurses and medical professionals. Skilled nursing is appropriate for seniors with complex medical needs, whether recovering from a hospital stay, managing a chronic condition, or requiring long-term clinical oversight.

Skilled nursing is often the highest level of non-hospital care available, and it’s frequently covered (in part) by Medicare or Medicaid following a qualifying hospital stay.

What Is a CCRC?

A CCRC, or Continuing Care Retirement Community, is a senior living campus that offers multiple levels of care in one location, typically including independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing. The key advantage? Residents can move through different levels of care as their needs change, without having to relocate to an entirely new community or uproot their lives.

Today, many CCRCs are also referred to as Life Plan Communities — a term that emphasizes the proactive, long-term planning aspect of choosing this kind of setting. A Life Plan Community isn’t just a place to receive care; it’s a place to build a fulfilling life with the confidence that support will be there when you need it.

Village Point Rehabilitation & Healthcare is situated on the campus of Monroe Village, a Springpoint Life Plan Community, giving residents and families access to a full continuum of care backed by more than 100 years of nonprofit senior living expertise.
