Comprehensive Hospice Care for End-of-Life Care

Hospice: A crucial option for care and comfort.

Hearing the words “terminal illness” can bring a flood of emotions, fears, and troubling thoughts to individuals and family members. But thanks to hospice, no one needs to face this final journey alone. The hospice program was instituted by Medicare in 1983 and since then, millions of terminally ill patients in the United States have received the comfort and relief of hospice care. Hospice care at Village Point combines palliative care, integrated therapies, and emotional and spiritual support to let families be together when they need each other most.

What is hospice and palliative care?

Both hospice care and palliative care focus on reducing pain and increasing patient comfort. The difference is that palliative care can be utilized at any stage of an illness to help a patient feel better, while hospice care is given when all curative treatment ceases and the patient has a life expectancy of six months or less. All pain control medicines, medical supplies, and medical equipment related to the terminal illness are provided, as well as direct care, hygiene assistance, adjunct therapies, and volunteer home help.

The benefits of hospice care at Village Point.

Perhaps the most frightening and difficult aspect of having a life-limiting illness, disease, or condition is the accompanying pain, especially in the last weeks and days. Balancing pain and symptom management while helping the patient to be “present” with loved ones during this precious time is what hospice does best. The hospice concept is family-centered, and the primary family caregiver is considered a member of the hospice team and participates in regular meetings to discuss the loved one’s condition and care. Hospice also recognizes that family members have their own forms of pain, stress, grief, and confusion about death and dying. This is why hospice services also include emotional support during and after the loss of a loved one.

With hospice overseeing the medical and comfort care, it’s much easier to focus on sharing time together, which can create positive, lasting memories. Though we may be unable to halt the progression of the clinical condition you now face, the professionals at Village Point Rehabilitation & Healthcare can help you keep it from controlling your final days of life.
